Welcome to Newsletter #16

This was my tenth year as a member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Assoc.) attending it’s eleventh conference, which was held in beautiful Charlotte, NC.  For some reason this year felt more like ‘old home week’ than it has ever felt before.  Perhaps because after ten years, it was ‘old home week’!  But I also met many wonderful new people and will add them to my list of NANPA friends, looking forward to seeing them again next year in Denver.  Photographers are a unique (or unusual) breed of business people.  We are the only group of people that I know of who joyfully stand around with our competitors talking up our photo tips, equipment advice, secrets (that are no longer a secret,)  or where the “hot spots” are to go and shoot!  Can you picture the defense attorney telling the prosecutor how his client committed the crime---or a fisherman revealing the whereabouts of his favorite fishing hole?  This is why I feel we, the members of NANPA, are special people, and why I encourage my workshop participants to join, not just NANPA, but any organization that will help them to learn the craft of photography and network with others.  You learn about new equipment from the trade show participants (thank you Delkin, Wimberly, Walt Anderson of Better Beamer fame, Hunt’s Photo & Canon---just to name a few---thanks for your help and service), you learn new techniques, ideas, and business strategies from the breakout sessions, and just good old-fashioned camaraderie hanging around the convention halls.  As I say and sincerely mean in the opening of my website slideshow…… (www.joannewilliamsphoto.com) : “Happiness adds and multiplies as we divide it and share it with others”.  How true!

I’m excited and proud to announce that IGFA’s (International Game and Fish Assoc.) second annual “Tournament of Art” has asked me to exhibit my work.  The exhibit will take place on  February 26th & 27th at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania.  This is a highly prestigious event with such famous artists as Guy Harvey, and artists from other parts of the country and world stretching all the way to Japan.  It will be a wonderful event, which you should try and attend if in the area.  There will be a Preview Party on Friday evening for the artists and their guests.  I personally invite you as my guest to attend the evening’s festivities from 5-8 pm.  If you are interested, please r.s.v.p. to me at (954) 941-7901 or my e-mail address.

At the IGFA event, I will also have on display the "JO JO FOTO-BOAT”, my new baby and photo tool.  This is a completely custom-designed fabulous piece of boating equipment equipped and rigged to move silently into 4” to 6” of water over flats with heavy-duty mounted Gitzo mono-pods strategically placed ( by me) & capable of holding up to 30 lbs. of camera equipment.  I’ve spent years boating around Florida trying to “get up close and personal” to our birds and other wildlife to photograph mating, habitats, feeding,  nesting & of all the critters this great state has to offer, and NOW I can!!  And So Can You!!!  I will be offering private and semi-private photo tours, but more to come about this wonderful opportunity later on in the next newsletter.

The August 2005 African Photo Safari is filling up nicely.  As August is the HIGH season in Kenya, the availability of the air travel is the major issue, so don’t dilly dally if you are interested.  At this moment there are two openings for this wonderful trip.  The uniqueness of my Safari is the 2-person per van rule I have…and….you come home with Incredible Images because of it and wonderful memories.

Tomorrow morning I leave for Panama to finalize my “recon” strategy and make decisions regarding offering photo safari/workshops in a few of the most wonderful areas of this country.  I’ll leave that as a teaser, and go pack my bags!!!
